Corona virus (Covid-19) and your hands and skin!

Since Seattle and New York have been at the epicenters of this virus in the U.S., we’ve seen the spectrum of facts, fears, and behavior.  Our clinic, Madison Skin & Laser Center, is associated with Swedish Hospital, near downtown Seattle.  We are in a 14 story medical building which connects to several other medical buildings.

We receive updates on this virus every day from the hospital administration.  And we are looking at the CDC (Center for Disease Control, Atlanta) daily. The CDC is the center for U.S. citizens on worldwide and local health issues, including this virus.

For the next few weeks, I’ll be blogging extra and reporting facts, fiction and the fears that we are hearing from our patients.

Facts:

  • Yes, the virus can live on our skin, along with the billions of good bacteria that also live on our skin normally.
  • It lives and is transmitted mostly by our hands.  Obviously coughing, sneezing, etc are also main routes of transmission.
  • Hand washing is the single most important thing we all can do to prevent and slow the spread of Covid-19
  • You do NOT need to wear a mask unless you are yourself ill, or you already have health issues that put you in a vulnerable group.
  • Really try not to touch your face, until AFTER you’ve washed your hands or used a hand sanitizer, when out and about.
  • Stay home if you are ill.

How to wash your hands properly:

  • Run the water comfortably warm to hot
  • Use a dollop of cleanser or soap, enough to create a lather
  • Lather the whole hand – back, front, between fingers, and to the lower wrist
  • Sing a song to yourself so you wash LONG enough.  Someone suggested Happy Birthday 2-3 times, but you get the idea. 🙂
  • Rinse well and dry.
  • If in a public restroom, when using a paper towel, to open the bathroom door to go out, and then throw it away.

Now, go enjoy your day!!!
